"WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON, SENATOR?": Single-payer health care supporters will stage an action targeting health insurers, Big Pharma and Senator Max Baucus (D., MT) this morning. Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has said that in writing his new healthcare legislation "everything is on the table" except single payer, which advocates say will guarantee coverage for every American, while controlling costs. Demonstrators plan to ask Baucus "Which side are you on, Senator?" at a National Health Policy Conference today that includes a Congressional Plenary this morning at the JW Marriott, 1331 Pennsylvania Ave. The action is being coordinated by the All Unions Committee For Single Payer Health Care-HR 676. - photo (left): rally for single payer health insurance, San Francisco, CA, June 2008; photo by Patricia Jackson

NOVA HOTEL WORKERS GET BUSINESS’ ATTENTION: The struggle by Northern Virginia hotel workers for justice is getting attention in interesting places. Virginia Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling recently found it necessary to warn his friends in the business community that "In Virginia, all three Democrat candidates for Governor recently walked a picket line in Northern Virginia supporting a union strike against one of Northern Virginia's largest hotels. They were also joined by Jody Wagner, a candidate for Lieutenant Governor. This is the first time in memory that a major party candidate for statewide office has walked a union picket line in support of a strike against a Virginia business." Hilton Crystal City hotel workers rallied on Martin Luther King Day (right) as part of President-elect Obama's official National Day Of Service. The workers have been without a contract for almost two years and the Hilton has been cutting out overtime and benefits while refusing to recognize seniority.- photo by Adam Wright
