Subject: Genetic Counselor Licensure
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am a health care worker and member of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE), writing to you to express my support for and ask your support for S1226/A269, legislation that requires the licensing of genetic counselors.
S1226 (Vitale/Whalen/Turner) /A269 (Vandervalk/Prieto) establishes standards of qualification, training and experience for individuals who practice genetic counseling, setting minimum educational and experience criteria for those individuals who hold themselves out to be experts to the public.
S1226/A269 also requires an applicant for licensure to possess a master's or higher degree in genetic counseling or its equivalent, from an accredited institution of higher education.
This legislation is supported by health professionals and genetic counselors, who recognize the need for standards that could be relied on by the public utilizing the services of a genetic counselor. The legislature voted overwhelmingly in support of this legislation, with passage by the Senate 38-0 and the Assembly 66-7-3. The cost for implementation and processing of the legislation will be minimal to the State since the licensees will be assessed a charge. I respectfully ask that you sign this very important legislation into law.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
Sincerely,
|
