Union Leaders Meet with Acting Comptroller General

Ron La Due Lake and Dan Meyer, chair and vice-chair of the Interim Council respectively, met with Acting Comptroller General Dodaro and other senior managers to discuss the emerging relationship between the Union and GAO management on Tuesday, July 1.  The meeting, held at the request of the Union, focused on the Union's vision for a partnership with management that allows for routine informal discussions with senior management as well as for more traditional formal communication, such as negotiations.  The Union leaders presented examples of issues where the Union has worked with management over the past months along with ideas for how the Union and management could work together more collaboratively to the benefit of GAO overall in the future.  Themes presented by the Union for discussion included being involved in projects earlier, meeting with relevant operations managers with decision making-authority where appropriate, and developing a partnership with management to achieve shared goals through regular, informal discussions.  In particular, Mr. Dodaro jumped in to discuss each particular issue raised by the Union leadership.  The discussion lasted a full 1 ½ hours and was felt to be constructive by all participants.  Also in attendance was Julie Clark, General Counsel for IFPTE; Sallyanne Harper, CFO/Chief Administrative Officer; Cynthia Heckman, Chief Human Capital Officer; and Eric Adams, Director of Workforce Relations.

Brown-bag Information Sessions on Interim Dues Structure

As noted previously, the Interim Council is proposing an interim dues structure of 0.3 percent (three-tenths of one percent) of salary.  The IC has held two brown-bag sessions to answer questions and will be holding more brown-bag sessions later this week and next week.  Field staff can participate by calling the following number: 1-866-285-7778 (passcode 9164844).  The dates of the remaining sessions are:

  • July 9, 2008 – 11:30 to 1:30PM ET, HQ room 2N30
  • July 14, 2008 – 11:30 to 1:30PM ET, HQ room 2N30

If you have questions, please contact Membership Committee Chair Chris Langford (PDP).

Interim Dues Ratification Vote Begins This Week

On Wednesday, July 9th, each bargaining unit employee will receive an email through a survey application and will be directed to a web site to vote on the interim dues structure.  As a bargaining unit employee, you will have until July 21 to cast your vote. Remember, your vote does NOT require you to join the union or pay dues. After the ratification of our constitution later this summer, this interim dues structure will apply until a more permanent governing body and the membership decides to make a change. For more information, please visit our website: http://www.gaoanalysts.org/HTML_Pages/FAQs.htm

We Want Your Feedback

The Communications Committee would like your feedback regarding articles you'd like to see, questions you’d like answered, or any other suggestions. Do you have a question or concern that you think others in the bargaining unit might share? Do you have a perspective on Union-management relations that you think might provide insight to others in the bargaining unit? Do you have an idea for a regular column? Do you know someone who should be receiving the newsletter, but isn’t?  This type of feedback will help to make the newsletter relevant and keep us from becoming just another “Delete” item in your mailbox!  Please send your comments to Lesia Mandzia (HC) or Charlie Willson (EWIS).
