In
the 50+ years since the merger of the AFL and the CIO the
Presidents, Secretary Treasurers and Executive Vice Presidents
of the AFL-CIO have separately visited the South. On
September 21st all three will be in Georgia. This is one
of only three stops on their first campaign after the end of the
AFL-CIO Convention. This is historic but it is more important
because it signifies the commitment the new officers have to
advancing unionism in the South. It signifies that our new
President Richard Trumka, Secretary Treasurer Liz Schuler and
Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker know that job growth
in the South has exceeded job growth in other regions of the
country. It signifies that they know that unions must
succeed in the South for the movement to succeed in the country.
