Stop Big New Tax Breaks for the Rich and Help Working Families

As our nation deals with the fallout of natural disasters, war and spiraling deficits, our leaders in the U.S. Congress have made their top two priorities clear: huge new tax cuts targeted to the wealthy and devastating cuts to programs that help hard-working families get by.

These aren’t the priorities of America’s working families—and it’s time our members of Congress knew that. Send a message to your representative and senators telling them you oppose cuts for working families and new tax breaks for the wealthy.

Subject: Please Support Working Families

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

With the House passing $56 billion in new tax breaks targeted overwhelmingly to the wealthiest Americans and $50 billion in cuts to programs that help struggling working families, it's clear the leadership's priorities are out of touch with ordinary Americans.

As your constituent, I strongly urge you to oppose new tax breaks for the wealthy and urge you to support the programs working families rely on, like Medicaid, student loans, child support enforcement and food stamps.

Our nation is struggling with the fallout from natural disasters. We're worried about the threat of terrorism. Our federal debt is spiraling ever deeper. And working families are struggling with falling wages, rising fuel costs and out-of-reach health care. Now more than ever, it's important to keep our priorities clear and pursue an agenda that helps working families instead of punishing them.

Sincerely,

Background Information

As our nation deals with the fallout of natural disasters, war and spiraling deficits, our leaders in Congress have made their top two priorities clear: huge new tax cuts targeted to the wealthy and devastating cuts to programs that help hard-working families get by.

Voting mostly along party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives passed $56 billion in tax breaks last week that would go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest sliver of Americans. The Tax Policy Center estimates that 84.2 percent of the cuts passed by the House would go to the top 20 percent of households by income.

But that’s not all. The tax cuts come after the House passed $50 billion in cuts to services struggling working families depend on, such as Medicaid, student loans, child support enforcement and food stamps.

These aren’t the priorities of America’s working families—and it’s time our members of Congress knew that. Send a message to your representative and senators telling them you oppose cuts for working families and new tax breaks for the wealthy.
