In Memory of Phil Terpening, Legislator and Labor Advocate

Ulster County Legislator, Phil Terpening, passed away late Wednesday evening. Phil was the Chairman of the Ulster County Labor Relations Committee and one of the hardest working members on the Legislature. Phil always stood with labor and fought for legislation that protected working families, not because it was politically expedient, but because he felt it was the right thing to do.

Phil was an outstanding person. He was upbeat, easy to talk to, and genuinely interested in his fellow man. He served his constituents in many different capacities and was always involved in his community. Just to name a few of his positions, Phil was the former Supervisor of Rosendale, an area coordinator for the Heart Fund, former President of the Lions Club, and a former member of the Rosendale Library Board. He not only lent us his ear, but lent his hand as well. Phil didn't just talk about making a difference; he strove to make sure that he was on the forefront of making significant improvements in the lives of his constituents and all families in Ulster County. Phil spent numerous hours volunteering on community projects and always made them his priority. While challenged with a cane, Phil still managed to be one our hardest working volunteers during our Labor Days of Caring event in Ellenville. He was on his hands and knees scraping paint on a 90 degree day because he refused to sit on the sidelines when his community needed help.

As Chairman of the Labor Relations Committee, Phil always understood the importance of the labor movement. He provided a forum through which any member of the community was welcome to discuss their concerns. When unions were being denied a contract, Phil invited the membership to speak with him so that he could become personally involved in their fight. He was intimately involved in the struggles of each union in Ulster County that called upon him.

Men like Phil are few, and he will be sorely missed.

LERA Meeting Dinner

Please join us for a dinner meeting for the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. The program for the evening will be "Partnership for Working Families" and will highlight a discussion led by Kate Atkins, Director of the Garden State Alliance for a New Economy (GANE). Kate has a tremendous amount of experience working with progressive groups that have taken the lead in community and labor organizing. The evening will provide the opportunity for the labor community in the Hudson Valley to learn from Kate's experience in an intimate and collegial setting and to build a path for the future.
