Support Newburgh Police Last week we sent out an alert concerning the struggle that the Newburgh Police Department is facing. Proposed budget cuts within the City of Newburgh will mean that at least 15 positions within the Police Department will either be demoted or eliminated. Newburgh is one of the most dangerous cities in New York and the city cannot face such a compromise. If you haven’t already participated, please click on the link below to send a message to those in Newburgh who have the power to make sure that the Newburgh doesn’t become even more unsafe. Please support the members of the PSOA and PBA unions, it only takes 30 seconds to send the message! http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/newburghpolice In addition, a public hearing for the 2010 budget will be held on Monday, November 9th at the Activity Center in Newburgh on Washington Street, at 7:00pm.
LERA Meeting Dinner Reminder The Hudson Valley Chapter of LERA will
host a dinner meeting on Tuesday, November 10th at
5:30pm. The meeting will focus on “Partnerships for
Working Families” and is an opportunity for the labor
community to learn more about the topic. We will be joined by
Kate Atkins, Director of the Garden State
Alliance for a New Economy (GANE). Kate has a tremendous amount
of experience working with progressive groups that have taken
the lead in community and labor organizing. The evening will
provide the opportunity for the labor community in the Hudson
Valley to learn from Kate's experience in an intimate and
collegial setting and to build a path for the
future. All are welcome and
encouraged to attend. For more information and to rsvp, please
visit our website.

Immigration Study Finds Enforcement has Undermined
Workers’
Rights An in-depth report
issued on October 27th, 2009 by the AFL-CIO, American
Rights at Work and the National Employment Law Project finds that our
government’s immigration enforcement in recent
years—“including a heavy reliance on raids and often
inadequately trained enforcement agents—has severely
undermined efforts to protect workers’ rights, to the
detriment of immigrant and native-born workers alike.” To
find out more about the report and to view the press release,
