Defend Children from the Bush Veto

President Bush recently vetoed legislation to renew the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which would provide health care coverage for more than 10 million children.

He did so “behind closed doors without any fanfare or news coverage,” the Associated Press reported. Bush knows denying health care to millions of children is not only deeply unpopular--it's the wrong thing to do.

The U.S. House will have the opportunity to do the right thing on Thursday, October 18.

Please tell your representative to vote to override Bush’s unhealthy veto.

Subject: Defend Children from the Bush Veto

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

President Bush has vetoed reauthorization of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

If Congress allows his veto to stand, millions of low-income children will go without health care coverage.

With this veto, Bush refused to listen to many leading Republican lawmakers who joined nearly every Democrat in the House and Senate in supporting reauthorization of the program.

Now it's time for Congress to be heard.

I urge you to vote to override the president's unhealthy veto.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) currently provides health care coverage to 6.6 million low-income children.

Enacted in 1997, SCHIP reauthorization is more necessary than ever before.

Since the children's health program began, the number of uninsured children has been reduced by one-third in the United States. But the erosion of employer-sponsored health benefits has caught up with children. In the past two years alone, the number of uninsured children has increased by 1 million--to 8.7 million.

Children with health care are healthier than those without coverage. Children in SCHIP and Medicaid are more likely to have lower rates of unmet health care needs, including doctor care, prescription drugs and hospital care.
