Subject: Support HB 70 to Restore Voting Rights to Former Felons

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Please show true leadership and support passage of HB 70, sponsored by State Representative Jesse Crenshaw, to restore voting rights of former felons.

As this bill languishes in the hands of House leadership our fellow Kentuckians continue to be denied their basic civil rights. And because the bill is designed to allow Kentuckians to vote on changing Section 145 of the Kentucky Constitution to require the automatic restoration of voting rights after a person completes their sentence, let the people decide!

The American Correctional Association, National Commission on Federal Election Reform and the American Bar Association all favor automatic restoration of voting rights.

I think it is in our best interest to pass HB 70 because it promotes rehabilitation and reintegration into society, which is what our criminal justice system is supposed to do.

Again, I need you to support HB 70.

Sincerely,

Background Information

There is so much at stake with this legislation:

  • more than 100,000 adults in Kentucky who have served their time cannot vote because of disenfranchisement
  • in 2004, only 53.4% percent of applicants had their civil rights restored, in 2005 the number was 49.3% and in 2006 the number was 28.1%
