The Human Cost of Toyota's Success

In February 2007, two employees at the Toyota plant in Georgetown KY were fired after finding a secret company report that exposed Toyota’s plans to hold down the wages and benefits of their US workers.  One of the fired employees was a 16-year veteran of the Georgetown plant.

There is growing concern among Toyota employees and community members about workers’ rights at the Toyota plant.  In addition to the firing of veteran employees, folks are concerned about the treatment of injured workers, who seem to disappear and the extent to which Toyota relies on long-term temporary workers -- many of whom receive little to no benefits.  There is also concern about the millions of dollars in tax incentives Toyota receives yearly.

We need you to take action by signing this petition and telling Toyota that enough is enough!

Subject: Justice at Toyota

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

We call on Toyota to end the...

...exploitation of temporary workers ...deplorable conditions women face daily in the plant ...abuse of Kentucky's tax base ...disrespect of injured workers ...irresponsible and unfair terminations of hard workers

And we demand that you re-instate Manuel Eades and Noel Riddell who were unjustly fired because they exposed your plan to drive down wages!

Background Information

On Sunday, June 10, 2007, the Kentucky Workers’ Rights Board heard testimony from current, fired, and former workers at Toyota about the conditions that the face.  Some of the issues raised include the unfair treatment of temporary workers, the need to re-instate terminated workers who were fired unjustly, and creating a safe work environment.  That safe work environment would entail fair treatment of injured workers, adequate restroom facilities for women, and a work environment free from exploitation.
