RSVP by:   February 17, 2009 at 12:00 am (Eastern Time)

On Valentine's Day we give flowers as an act of love and kindness. Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to educate students about labor rights while connecting to a well known holiday.

Join educators February 10-17 to honor the workers who devote their days to cultivating the flowers given to loved ones for Valentine's Day.

ILRF has created a lesson plan for you to download and utilize for your classroom.  ILRF is eager to hear your feedback or suggestions for other matierals you may need.  Email eva@ilrf.org with questions or comments.

Other ideas for resources in your classroom include:.

  • - Show your class a 10 minute clip from Democracy Now of an interview with a Colombian Dole flower plantation worker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5_EeXginA

  • - Encourage your students to edit or draft a letter like this one that you can send or drop off at a grocery store or flower shop.

  • - Pass out a fact sheet about the cut flower industry to your students and develop an exercise around internet research

  • - Complete campaign toolkit which includes graphic depictions of the cut flower supply chain, a timeline of key events, and other background information about the cut flower industry
