As the harvest season for cotton in Uzbekistan
begins, children are once again removed from schools across the
country and forced to pick cotton. ILRF has teamed up with
the American Federation of Teachers and a broad range of
organizations in the US and Central Asia to call for an end to
forced child labor in Uzbekistan. Take
action by October 2nd to tell the Uzbek government
that you will not stand for such egregious human rights
abuses! All supporters who sign the petition by
October 2nd will have their names displayed on a quilt in DC on
October 14th. If you are interested in taking part in
local actions in the Washington, DC area to support this
campaign, please send an e-mail to volunteer@ilrf.org.
DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR REVERSE
TRICK-OR-TREATING!
|
This Halloween, ILRF is joining organizations across the
country in supporting the third annual “Reverse
Trick-or-Treating." As part of this activity, thousands of young
people will hand out information about child labor and forced
labor in West Africa's cocoa industry and give Fair Trade
chocolate to the houses where they go trick-or-treating. You can
order your kit online here:
www.ReverseTrickOrTreating.org.
The deadline to register for groups is October 1 and for
individuals is October 13. Order today and don’t forget to
note in your registration form that you heard about it from
ILRF!
ILRF EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR, BAMA ATHREYA, APPOINTED TO SPECIAL US GOVERNMENT
ADVISORY GROUP ON FORCED AND CHILD LABOR
After 20+ years of working with workers and grassroots
organization around the world to end child labor, Bama Athreya,
Executive Director of ILRF, was appointed by Agriculture
Secretary Tom Vilsack to the Consultative Group to Eliminate the
Use of Child Labor and Forced Labor in Imported Agricultural
Products on September 23, 2009. Ms. Athreya has been a
relentless champion of children’s rights and has led ILRF
to major achievements such as successfully
convincing the Department of Labor to include cocoa, cotton,
rubber, soccer balls and tobacco in its list of goods that are
believed to have been produced with child labor. ILRF
is thrilled to be a part of this new group, and looks forward to
collaborating with other stakeholders toward the ultimate goal
of eliminating forced labor and child labor in global
