Policy Forum: Strengthening Core Labor Standards through Public Procurement Reform

Friday, November 6, 1:00-4:00 pm
Cannon House Office Building, Room 340, Washington D.C.
Map: http://www.aoc.gov/cc/cc_map.cfm
Sponsored by Rep. Mike Michaud, Rep. Phil Hare, and Rep. Diane Watson

RSVP to summit@sweatfree.org appreciated. FREE!

The forum is dedicated to ending the use of taxpayer dollars in global sweatshops and in domestic workplaces with substandard working conditions.  It will provide multiple perspectives on the role of high-road public procurement in advancing core labor standards and decent working conditions, including testimony from workers, businesses, government, and labor rights advocates.  The forum will highlight the experiences of state and local governments in setting labor standards for government suppliers and holding them accountable through supply chain transparency and independent factory monitoring. Based in part on those experiences, the forum will outline policy solutions for reforming federal procurement from both domestic and international sources. Come support this important effort to make sure our tax dollars fund decent working conditions and real economic recovery!

Highlights of Current Garment Worker Organizing Around the World Panel

Saturday, November 7, 2:30-4:00 pm
Georgetown University Law Center, Hotung Hall, Room 1000
Map: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/directions/

RSVP to summit@sweatfree.org appreciated. FREE!

We live in a race-to-the bottom economy characterized by globalization, outsourcing, and increased use of temporary and contract workers. The people who make our clothes, just like other low-income workers, face tough times both in the U.S. and abroad. And yet, despite threats of firings and factory closure, empowered workers join together to stand up for their rights and organize to form unions. Come hear about the struggles of workers who make U.S. military apparel in Puerto Rico; organizing strategies of Chinese workers who are prohibited from forming independent unions; the campaign of Asian workers to raise their wages, across the continent, to living wages; and more inspiring examples of worker power and international solidarity!
