Ask the Senate to give support staff a pay raise!

Make sure that school support staff get a pay raise!

On May 15, the House of Representatives adopted an amendment to the state budget, HB 1, giving school support employees a $1,000 pay supplement.

It was a big victory for freshman Representative Herbert Dixon and the LFT. Earlier in the session, Rep. Dixon's HB 717, which would have given permanent $1,000 pay raises to school support staff, had been denied by the Appropriations Committee after winning the approval of the House Education Committee.

Unless this amendment is approved by the Senate and Gov. Bobby Jindal, school employees - many of whom must live on poverty-level wages - will get no raise at all from the state this year. That is shameful in a state that is enjoying some of the biggest budget surpluses ever.

We entrust the safety of our children to these hard-working employees, and hold them to high standards. They get our children to school safely and on time, struggle to keep our school buildings clean and well-maintained, provide nourishing meals, maintain vital records and help teachers in the classroom. They deserve better treatment.

Please click on the link and tell your Senator and Gov. Jindal that you believe school support staff deserve a pay raise. Ask them to approve the $1,000 supplement in Rep. Dixon's amendment.

NOTE: In order to send Gov. Jindal an e-mail, you will be asked to complete a short form. Please follow the instructions and let the governor know how important this issue is.

Subject: Please keep the school support staff supplement in the budget!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

On May 15, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the budget by Rep. Herbert Dixon that grants a one-time, $1,000 pay supplement to school support employees. I urge you to keep this amendment in the budget.

We entrust the safety of our children to these hard-working employees, and hold them to high standards. They get our children to school safely and on time, struggle to keep our school buildings clean and well-maintained, provide nourishing meals, maintain vital records and help teachers in the classroom. They deserve better treatment.

A teacher pay raise is already in the budget. Don't leave out these hard working, deserving employees. Please keep the amendment in HB 1 that gives a $1,000 supplement to school support staff.

Sincerely,
