Support extended sick leave for school employees

Tell the House of Representatives to give school support staff extended sick leave!

Under current law, teachers, other certificated employees and bus drivers have a right to up to 90 days of extended sick leave at 65% of their salary in a six-year period. The leave, which can be taken after all the teacher’s accumulated sick leave is exhausted, can be used for personal illness or the illness of a close family member.

School support staff were left out when the original extended sick leave law was passed. This bill corrects that error, and gives all school employees the same rights to extended sick leave.

Subject: Please vote FOR SB 473 by Sen. Lydia Jackson

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As my Representative, I urge you to vote for SB 473 by Sen. Lydia Jackson.

This bill gives school support staff the same right to extended sick leave that teachers have now. It means that once employees have used up all their sick leave during a catastrophic or long-term illness, they may have up to 90 days of extended sick leave at 65% of their salary in any six-year period. The leave can be used for personal illness, or the illness of a close family member.

I believe the legislature was wrong to exclude these employees when the original sick leave law was written. This is a chance to correct that error and do the right thing for school support staff.

Please support the Louisiana Federation of Teachers' position and vote for SB 473 when it comes before the House.

Sincerely,
