Tell the House Ways and Means Committee to fund higher education!
Tell the Ways and Means Committee to vote "YES" on SB 335!
Convince lawmakers to support higher education!
Temporary suspension of tax deduction would offset drastic cuts.
The Senate has bravely confronted Governor Bobby Jindal's veto threat and voted for SB 335 by Sen. Lydia Jackson. Now we must convince the House Ways and Means Committee to send this bill to the House floor for a vote.
The bill would temporarily suspend a portion of a tax deduction for excess federal itemized personal deductions. The result would be a $118 million revenue stream that would offset some of the $200 million slated to be slashed from our universities, colleges and technical schools.
This is not a new tax. It is a temporary suspension of a deduction that has not yet gone into effect.
It's a tough fight. Gov. Jindal is pushing representatives hard to oppose the bill. But it is one of the very few options left to avoid disastrous cuts to higher education funding.
Your voice can mean the difference bewteen success and failure - please act now.

Subject: Please vote "YES" on SB 335!
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, you have a chance to save higher education from a financial disaster.
Louisiana's colleges and universities are the best hope we have for a better future, but the $200+ million budget cut planned for higher education will be devastating to our state.
There is only one piece of legislation up for consideration that could help plug that budget hole this year: SB 335 by Sen. Lydia Jackson.
Passing the bill will not mean new taxes - just a temporary suspension of a deduction that has not yet gone into effect.
The $118 million it will raise could save our universities and colleges - and perhaps the state itself - from disaster.
Please vote to approve SB 335 when it comes before the House Ways and Means Committee. Send it to the floor for a vote!
Sincerely,
|
