Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Local 59

Greetings,

It is with great sadness that we let you know of the passing of Kathy Kopka on February 7th, 2009. Kathy worked in Minneapolis Public Schools for 30 years as an Educational Assistant, then Teacher, Mentor, and Assistant Principal.  In addition, she was also a strong union activist and volunteered as a steward and committee member for many years.

Kathy had a passion for education and was known for her common sense approach.  She mentored many teachers and offered them countless useful suggestions that endured over time.  Her passion for teaching and learning even spread to her family - two of her children, Dean and Kerri, ended up working for Minneapolis Public Schools.

Kathy explored life to the fullest as a life long learner and had a great sense of humor while doing so.  Her heart was big and her spirit generous.

She will be missed by the many who were touched by her contributions.
