Greetings,
MFT Julie Sabo's Weekly Report for Feb 23 to 27
The American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act was
released last week. The House and Senate began a general
overview of the plan as the details continue to be
evaluated. As we think about this money, which we are very
grateful for, we need to remember, however, that it is one-time
money. In terms of our state budget problems, it is a pile
next to the hole, not in the hole. This money is a
lifeline while we stop digging and start filling the hole our
state is in. The tough choices still need to be made or we
may find ourselves in a worse position in the next budget cycle
with no federal lifeline.
A few bills are beginning to move through the committee
process. A bill increasing the compulsory school age to 18
passed the House Education Policy committee and is headed to the
House Education Finance committee. A bill to create
statewide P.E. standards also was sent on to the House Education
Finance committee. The discussions around both bills was
thoughtful with regard to students, but with money needed for
both bills, they face a very difficult road this year.
MFT Lobbyists Rose Hermodson and Julie Sabo continue to meet
with Legislators in private meetings and in working
groups. Although the times are tough, we remain
optimistic; education is highly valued by Legislators.
