Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Local 59

Greetings,

The new Common Core end-of-high school math and English draft content standards.

On Monday, September 21, 2009 the Common Core State Standards Initiative lead by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association released drafts of the end-of-high school standards for mathematics and English language arts. Two groups of AFT members participated in a preliminary review of the draft standards. The drafts are now available online for public review and all comments are due October 21, 2009.   We urge high school math and English teachers  to review the standards and submit comments to the address below. (We just received this information on October 2, 2009).

As you may know, the AFT began advocating for common state content standards in 1983, as part of Albert Shanker's response to the landmark report "A Nation at Risk." We continue to support efforts to develop common state standards, but strongly believe that teachers voices and experience must be included in this endeavor. All information regarding this Initiative can be found at www.corestandards.org.

Thanks for looking the standards over.  I know how busy you all are so you input is greatly appreciated.
