Subject: Please withdraw your proposal on postal privatization

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a Letter Carrier from Arizona. It has come to my attention that you are advocating the privatization of the U.S. Postal Service through contracting out, even though a bipartisan majority of Congress rejected this policy in July. My union has shared with me the letter you recently sent to the Chairman of the Postal Service Board of Governors in which you advocated the contracting out of my job to the lowest bidder in the private sector. I am dismayed that you would take such an action after the House of Representatives rejected your amendment to achieve the same end in H.R. 22 by a vote of 379-51 on July 26, 2005.

The U.S. Postal Service offers extremely affordable and reliable service to every home and business in the country six days a week. USPS Letter Carriers deliver this mail and are trusted as federal government employees to enter the mailbox of residential and business addresses everyday. It is unclear to me why you would sponsor a proposal that would put that service and the mail security of your constituents at risk. It is equally unclear to me why you think contracting out delivery services to the lowest bidder will improve service when it will almost surely diminish it. Most important, it is unclear to me how you could support any measure that would take a good middle-class job away from people like me, your constituent, in order to save a buck. I ask you ONCE AGAIN to withdraw this proposal and allow the Postal Service and its dedicated employees to continue to provide the superb service that Americans have to come to rely on for more than 230 years.

Sincerely,

Background Information

If Congressman Flake has his way, the Postal Service could look into privatization and the possibility of throwing out our hard-won contract, cutting our pay and benefits, and decreasing service for the American public.
