MD minimum wage and health care

Last year, the Maryland Legislature passed two important bills for working families: a bill to raise the minimum wage to $6.15 an hour, and the Fair Share Health Care Act, which will ensure that big, profitable companies like Wal-Mart provide quality, affordable health care to their employees -- instead of making taxpayers like us foot the bill. Although Governor Ehrlich vetoed both bills, the Maryland legislature has one more chance to make the Fair Share Health Care and minimum wage bills become law by voting to OVERRIDE the Governor's veto when the legislative session starts again. Please send a message now urging your representative in Annapolis to override the Governor's veto. It's easy--just click on the link below.

Subject: Override veto of Health Care and Minimum Wage bills

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I hope you will support the minimum wage increase and Fair Share Health Care Act by voting to override the Governor's veto.

Working families need a raise to help make ends meet -- and when working families earn more, they have more money to spend, which will help boost Maryland's economy.

Multi-billion dollar companies like Wal-Mart are passing their health care costs onto working families and other businesses. It's time they pay their fair share for health care.

Please support the minimum wage increase (SB 89) and the Fair Share Health Care bill (H.B.1284/SB790) and vote to override the Governor's veto.

Working families are counting on you.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Letter carriers understand that while federal employees like us enjoy affordable health insurance, our premiums are higher than necessary because companies like Wal-Mart fail to provide benefits and the cost of treating the uninsured is passed on to those who are covered. We also know that a higher minimum wage is crucial to economic justice in Maryland.
