Dear NALC e-Activist,
The Oakland city council is taking up a resolution this week
to require the state legislature to adopt a "Do Not
Mail" registry. If this resolution passes and is
enacted by Sacramento, it would have a serious impact on
California mail volume by encouraging customers to opt out of
advertising mail. This could reduce current volume by as
much as 50 percent of what we are getting today.
This resolution, if enacted, would cause a large number of
layoffs of letter carriers, in Oakland as well as across the
state. Also, we are already facing issues dealing with closures
of post offices in Oakland and throughout Alameda County;
passing this resolution would cause a further drop in mail
volume and help facilitate neighborhood post office
closures.
If you or any of your friends and family live in Oakland,
please call and e-mail the mayor and
each of your Oakland city council members (listed
below), both Tuesday and Wednesday morning, and
ask them to please oppose the "Do Not Mail" resolution
on the November 5 agenda of the Rules and Legislation
committee.
