Stop the Layoffs, Hands Off Our Benefits

Once again, New Jersey legislators are trying to score cheap political points by scapegoating state workers for New Jersey's financial problems.  Even though we addressed these issues in last year's negotiations, some legislators are beating the drum for new cuts in pensions and health care.

We need your help to stop these attacks. Urge your representatives in the State Senate and Assembly to respect the collective bargaining process and to reject Governor Corzine's proposed workforce reductions.

Subject: Stop the Layoffs, Hands off Our Benefits

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

They're at it again. Despite our responsible bargaining over health and pension benefits last year, some legislators have proposed a package of bills that would cut benefits for future employees and violate our contracts. The proposals include:

* Basing pensions of future employees on the last five years of service, rather than three a 3% cut in pensions that will hurt low wage workers most

* No pension coverage for any worker who works less than 35 hours a provision that is particularly destructive to women who leave full time employment in order to raise children

* No healthcare coverage for local government part timers something that has been negotiated in the past.

Whatever happened to Democrats respecting the collective bargaining process? These issues should be dealt with through negotiation, not legislation.

I am a public worker and I don't support Democrats who refuse to honor collective bargaining. I want you to help stop the legislative attack on public worker pensions and health benefits.

Sincerely,
