NEXT LOCAL COUNCIL
MEETING -
Date: March 18th,
2009 Time: 11:30 AM until 2:30 PM Location:
Memphis Airport, Conference Room “A” (Directly
adjacent to TSA Security Checkpoint for Concourse
“A”) A light lunch will
be served
March
18 marks our next local council meeting. Our special guest at
this meeting will be Pat Friend, AFA-CWA International
President. Along with dealing with local issues and giving an
election update, we will be reviewing and voting on the advanced
agenda items for the upcoming Board of Directors (BOD) meeting.
This is your opportunity to affect change in your Union. For
those of us who do not know, our BOD is comprised of the sixty
plus Local Executive Council Presidents from every AFA airline,
both large and small. They come together once a year, to approve
the yearly budget and bring forth changes that their individual
members would like to see implemented to our Constitution and
Bylaws.
If you
would like to discuss a particular ‘local issue’ at
our meeting on the 18th please call, or email Shawn
Fivecoat at sfivecoat@comcast.net by March 11 with
any advanced agenda items that you would like the members to
address. You will also have the opportunity to bring forth any
late agenda items at the meeting. The decisions made at this
meeting will determine how our Local is run and how Shawn votes
at the BOD. We hope to see as many people as possible at our
meeting helping us make these decisions.
NEW LEC 93
WEBSITE - Thank you to
Rosemary Cunningham for volunteering her time to be our new
webmaster. For those who have not visited our newly redesigned
site, there is a lot of new information available. We invite you
to check it out at www.AFA93.org . Remember whenever
you receive emails from MEM Council 93, you can always click the
blue banner at the top of the email and you will automatically
be routed to our local website. We want our website to be a
resource for you. Please speak up and let us know what you would
like to see on your website. Please contact Rosemary if you have
any suggestions. She can be reached at rmcunham@bellsouth.net .
EMPLOYEE BUS -
LEC 93 is fully aware of the many
injuries and concerns our flight attendants are having with the
MEM employee bus. Several of our fellow flight attendants have
contacted us asking if there is anything we can do as a group to
address this issue. Those flight attendants leading the way are
Glenda Keller and Gail Tigner. In the very near future we will
be circulating a petition in an attempt to prompt local
management and the Memphis Airport Authority to help us find a
safe solution to this growing problem.
Recently Maureen
Nyquist, MEM Base Manager sent out an internal company email
about this issue. During the recent visit by Sandy Gordon we
were told that she was going to have someone from ATL that
specializes in Safety come to MEM and look at the
buses.
What we
are hoping for is roll aboard buses similar to those used in DTW
and MSP. You should notice that the MEM Airport Authority
provides safe buses for the passengers utilizing the ‘long
term’ parking lots. It is a serious hazard for women in
high heels to have to navigate four steep and narrow steps
carrying luggage for a 5 day trip.
If you
are approached by someone with one of these petitions we ask
that you add your name to this worthy cause. Recently, we have
had several flight attendants severely injured attempting to
navigate the steps on those buses.
NEW PERISHABLE GOODS RULE - Delta
recently sent all pre-merger NWA flight attendants a policy
change pertaining to perishable goods onboard our aircraft. The
items in question are the “for sale “ sandwiches,
veggie trays, and fruit/cheese trays. The new rule says 1 item
per crew member, including pilots, may be consumed on
‘downline’ flights after the service has been
completed. The rule further states that these items must be
consumed onboard the aircraft. Please help remind each other
that under no circumstance can ANY item be removed from the
aircraft. Unfortunately, any item removed from the aircraft,
even if it is trash, will be considered theft. The only
exception to this rule is your contractually guaranteed crew
meal. Please keep in mind the recent memo spoke ONLY of domestic
flights. The NW policy for international flights has NOT
changed. ANY item removed from these flights will be considered
theft as well. The NW Policy Manual states: “Property of
NW can NOT be removed from the aircraft whether it is of value
or not.”
INFLIGHT VISIT BY MARGO
SMITH - On March
12th LEC Vice-President, Gavin Allan was returning
home from a 5 day trip. On his way out of the airport he was
informed by several MEM flight attendants that there was a Delta
flight attendant in the Crew Lounge insinuating that we did
not need a Union. Gavin parked his bags and headed down stairs
to witness a woman explaining that she was a 35 year Delta
flight attendant and giving reasons why we would not need a
Union after the merger.
I
approached Director, Base Operation, Sandy Gordon last week when
she was in MEM and asked her if she was aware of this event.
When I gave her the details she told us her
name is Margo Smith. She is a manager in a Delta call
center for Inflight Services, and lives in Memphis and commutes
to Atlanta. She is NOT an active flight attendant, she is Delta
management. She was hired as a flight attendant and has
maintained her certification. However, she has not flown a
trip in many years. Gavin was suspicious because she was being
vague or giving out inaccurate information.
Although Delta is allowed to have
management in the Crew Lounges, we would expect them to be
transparent as to their true job description and be accurate in
the distribution of information.
If you encounter
something similar please contact one of your Local Officers if
you have any questions. Also, if you call us one of us
immediately we will attempt to proceed to the airport ASAP to
make sure they are being forthright.
CONTRACT INFO - There
is a little known and underutilized section of your contract
that could put some extra money in your pocket. Please take
advantage: If you turn to Section 4.E.1 – Expenses (page
4.7) of your Contract you will see:
E.
Transportation
1.
At base stations a Flight Attendant shall
be allowed actual necessary transportation expenses, but not
to exceed two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) on any trip,
for transportation between the airport and place of lodging
whenever:
a.
He/She is required to report at the
airport between the hours of 2000 (local time) and 0800 (local
time); or
b.
His/Her incoming flight arrives at
the airport between 2000 (local time) and 0800 (local
time); or
c.
When authorized by Crew Scheduling to use a cab, Flight Attendants
shall be allowed actual cab fare or parking expenses, at the
Flight Attendant's option.
You are
able to go back 90 days and claim no more than $5.00 per pattern
if the above criteria has been met. The form for claiming this
expense can be found on RADAR. Go to the ‘INFLIGHT
SERVICES’ Tab and click of ‘FORMS’. You are
looking for the Cab Transportation form. You can turn one form
at the end of each month and the form does not need a managers
signature.
WEAR YOU UNION
PINS - We are hearing comments
from Delta flight attendants about our Union Pins. They
believe if they see a NW flight attendant uniform without a
Union Pin they believe that flight attendant does not support
the Union.
PLEASE WEAR YOUR UNION PIN !
