April Newsletter

Announcing Council 90-ATL:  The AFA-CWA Constitution and Bylaws (C&B) allows for any base with over 100 members to form its own Council.  The Executive Board granted permission to the NWA MEC at the Board of Directors meeting earlier this month to form Council 90 – ATL to represent the NW pre-merger flight attendants now based in ATL.  Temporary officers for this new Council have been appointed by the International Secretary-Treasurer.  Eventually the members will be able to elect permanent leadership.

Council 90 Officers are:

LEC President, David Carter -  dcarter@nwaafa.org
LEC Vice-President, Jacklyn Richards -
jrichards@nwaafa.org
Secretary, , Alex Adair -
aadair@nwaafa.org

The LEC Officer of Council 93-MEM stand ready to assist Council 90 – ATL in any way possible to ensure a smooth transition.

An unfortunate by-product of the creation of Council 90 - ATL will be the loss of Council Rep. Cameron Sasser.  The C&B does not allow for a representative to be elected to a position in a base where he/she is not a member.  The remaining Council 93 – MEM Officers would like to take this opportunity to thank Cameron for his assistance over the last year.  We wish him ‘Safe Skies’ out of ATL.  He will be missed.

Election Timeline:  In an effort to relieve some of the anxiety surrounding the timeline for our upcoming representational election, below is background information pertinent to when we will initiate the election process.

President Obama recently nominated Linda Puchala to the National Mediation Board (NMB).  The US Senate must now confirm the nomination to complete the process.  With the confirmation of Ms. Puchala we expect the NMB to ensure a fair election.  There are over 6,000 DL flight attendants in ATL alone.  With the recent influx of pre-merger NW flight attendants and the creation of Council 90-ATL we are confident the DL flight attendants will begin to hear firsthand the benefits of a legally binding contract.

Delta has not come close to completing the majority of the eight steps necessary for the NMB to consider “Single Carrier Status” for a combined carrier.   We recently learned that the earliest they could complete all required training is March 2010.

The Delta Organizing Committee is working diligently to create the structure/contacts necessary to build support for an INDUSTRY LEADING CONTRACT for the world’s premier flight attendants at the world's premier airline.

The combined NW and DL Organizing Committee will be meeting in ATL on May 13 & 14 to evaluate the above parameters.  The bottom line is we will initiate the election process when we are confident in its successful outcome.

IQ and AQ Training:  Management is releasing a lot of information about the additional training required for flight attendants to achieve certification for the combined fleet.  Any time you add six additional days of training to learn six new aircraft types along with new policies and procedures to our already busy schedules, there will be anxiety.

The issue of you being assigned a random month to attend training has raised a lot of questions.  Please refer to Section 11.C.1.d.(1)(2)(3), page 11.5. of our Contract.  Note that the ability to assign in such a manner is based upon a situation where "such training exceeds two (2) consecutive days in duration” - which both IQ and AQ are scheduled to do.   This training is not unlike ART.  If you recall, you were not allowed to bid for your ART month; it was assigned to you.  However, you are allowed to bid for the days within your assigned month.

You will be assigned one of three locations (ATL, MSP, or SLC) to attend the training.  If you are not based in one of these three locations, accommodations will be provided.  Our contract requires you to be paid 4:15 for each day of IQ and AQ Training.  Also, the 4:15 per day will be credited toward your month of flying for your IQ and AQ training.

Expect management to strictly enforce the assignment of your scheduled training months.  The FAA has mandated that the new training be completed within a set number of days of your current ART and in sequential order.  With over 20,000 flight attendants having to be trained it becomes a daunting task.  In NO way am I condoning the handling of this program, I just want you to know why it is being done in this manner.

We ask those of you who attend the new training early in the schedule to share your experiences with your flying partners.  The anxiety level should be reduced when information about the program is shared.

Council 93 – MEM EAP Committee:  Earlier this month at the AFA Board of Directors meeting the award for the Peggy Price EAP Award was awarded to USAir Council 82-LGA for their remarkable work surrounding USAir flight 1549.  Council 82’s EAP successes are too many to list here.

I want you all to know that I nominated our own Council 93 EAP Committee for this award as well.  I felt the work that our EAP Committee has done since our joining AFA has been phenomenal.  During the award presentation, International Vice-President Veda Shook commented on the difficulty in choosing a winner for this award.   Although there is no official ‘second place,’ I am confident our Committee was among the top candidates for this award.  Due to the complete confidentiality of their work there is no way for me to publicize their specific accomplishments.  Please know, the group below is remarkable in every way, we are very fortunate to have them.

The current members nominated were:  Kathy Dotson, Committee Chair, Dotty Hagan, member and the former members who also contributed and were included in the nomination are Brenda McAden, Lucy Emanuel-Green, and Suda Calabro.  These remarkable women are truly life savers.
