FAA FATIGUE STUDY -
PART 2: VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED!
AFA-CWA has actively advocated for the FAA to conduct
a comprehensive Flight Attendant Fatigue Study. The first
part of the FAA's commitment to our concerns was a 'survey'
recently randomly distributed to 22,000 U.S. flight
attendants.
The second part of the study is a 'field study'
involving a smaller sampling group - but more
comprehensive. Information will be collected by
asking FA participants to report and monitor their duty periods,
sleep, and other activities over several weeks of flying, using
personal digital assistants (PDAs), wrist activity monitors and
pedometers.
Only 210 flight attendant
volunteers will be selected from network, low-cost, and regional
U.S. airlines.
Participants must be active flight attendants. The total
time spent on the study will be about 1-2 hours per day, broken
up across several 15-minute logbook/task sessions throughout
each day. Upon completion of the study and safe return of
all research equipment, each participant will receive
$400.

This website explains how the study will be
conducted, requests information on the type of trips you
typically fly, how to contact you, and also provides a point of
contact for further information. Study personnel from an
independent research institute, working with the FAA's Civil
Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), will contact 50 flight
attendants each month over the next 4-5 months to arrange
participation.
Your participation in this important research is
encouraged. We would like to see as many Northwest flight
attendants included in Part 2 of the study as possible. Selection of study
participants will be accomplished shortly, so it is
important that you express your interest as soon as
possible. Check it out - and get
involved!
