HEALTH ALERT!   UPDATE ON SWINE FLU – PLEASE READ

As you are aware, news headlines continue to be dominated by reports on the      outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.  There are confirmed or suspected cases in several other countries as well, including 64 confirmed cases in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel advisory yesterday "out of an abundance of caution".  The CDC's Director further warned . .

"People should avoid non-essential travel to Mexico as a precaution to guard against contracting the swine flu".

AFA International has issued a timely, need-to-know informational bulletin on swine flu.  Click HERE to learn more and how you can protect yourself, in addition to what AFA is doing in support of Flight Attendant health and necessary protections.  It is noted, also, that the company issued an 'updated' Swine Flu Q & A - and has it posted on FA Atlas under 'What's New'.  The Air Safety Committee page of our website will be updated often - go to Air Safety, then click on "Health."

On Tuesday, your MEC Air Safety, Health & Security representatives were briefed on the swine flu situation by Sandy Taylor, NW/DL Air Crew and Passenger Health Services, stating that the company is considering the possible purchase of anti-viral medication (such as Tamiflu) for employees who are most 'at risk'.  Such decision will be made in the next day or two.

In addition to recommended hand washing, ASHS Committee asked the company if disposable, pick-up gloves used in the main cabin could also be used in Business/First Class as an additional layer of protection when picking up service items and refuse.  This has now been approved, and the company will work to ensure adequate supplies are boarded.

Also, audits are currently underway to determine requirements for increased supplies of alcohol-based hand wipes and face masks.  More information will be forthcoming.

Understandably, the situation is very fluid and changing rapidly.  We will continue to update the 'Hotline' and website as events unfold and new information becomes available.  Also, keep updated by visiting the CDC website and the World Health OrganizationRemember to always protect yourself - and be highly aware of people exhibiting flu-like symptoms whom you may come into contact with.
