Dear Flying
Partners,
A FURTHER REDUCTION IN FLYING
WAS ANNOUNCED - I have been briefed by the Company
regarding the announcement of a further planned 5% reduction in
flying. The information I received has been provided to
all elected AFA officers system wide this morning. This
was also announced in an internal memo to all employees at
both Delta and Northwest and to the public. Details of the
reduction plans can be found in the internal memo sent in
Company email and posted on ATLAS and DeltaNet.
Your AFA representatives will
continue to work with the Company, to do everything in our power
to eliminate the need for any involuntary furloughs or
transfers. SLIP leaves, Company Convenience Leaves, and
Split Line (shared line program) negotiations will continue -
all toward the goal of protecting flight attendant jobs. A
new Early Out program is not anticipated, but all ideas are on
the table to prevent layoffs at this time. Our AFA
Government Affairs Committee and MSP AFA members were
instrumental in changing the law in Minnesota, so that those
MSP-based members currently on SLIP leave and those who may
elect to take a SLIP leave in future could be
deemed eligible for Unemployment Insurance.
(Minnesota was the only NWA flight attendant base state that did
not make this benefit available to our members in this
situation).
DELTA AIR LINES
SENIORITY INTEGRATION COMMITTEE LETTER POSTED – I was
also informed this morning by a pre-merger Delta flight
attendant that a response to my April 22nd letter (to our colleagues in
the Delta Seniority Integration Committee) had been posted on
DeltaNet. I have not yet received that response via
email, fax, nor U.S. Mail. However, once we have done
everything that we can for our members in regards to the recent
news regarding an increased Reduction in Flying, I will seek out
the posting. I respect our fellow flight attendants on the
Delta SIC and look forward to working with them at the
appropriate time. I value their comments and hard work,
and those of their legal advisors. Clearly, we (AFA) have
a legal difference of opinion with Delta Air Lines regarding seniority integration. In any event
there is no need to rush our integration since, by
Delta’s admission; crews will not be flying together until
at least early 2010. Merging our seniority lists sooner will not
change that. The pilot’s lists are merged and they still
don’t fly together.
THANK YOU – Your
hard work, perseverance, and solidarity in these tough economic
times is an inspiration. We are flight attendants and we
are professionals. We will make it through this merger and
all the changes, our election, and our contract
negotiations. We are as powerful as we let ourselves
be.
Your indomitable
spirit makes me proud to be Pro-Flight Attendant, Pro-Delta
and Pro-AFA.
In unity for a better
future,
