AFA-CWA DTW eNEWS - April
14, 2008
LOCAL 94
COUNCIL MEETING THIS WEEK
Our next Local 94 Council Meeting will be held this
Wednesday, April 16, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. An agenda outline
for the meeting, which will include important updates locally
and system-wide (grievance reviews, discussion of current
events, recommendations for purging your corporate employment
file, feedback on the new cart service, PBS bidding and other
issues and concerns most important to you on the line)
is attached at the bottom of this hotline. LEC 94 announces Guest Speaker AFA-CWA
Senior Benefits Attorney Mary Lou Savage.
QUESTIONS ABOUT PENSION OR
LONGTERM DISABILITY?
You are invited to
attend an open forum with Mary Lou Savage, AFA Legal
Benefits Attorney, to address your
concerns regarding pension, mergers questions and Long Term
Disability options starting at 10:30 a.m. prior to the base
meeting. If you
have questions you would addressed in advance, please e-mail her
at MLSavage@afanet.org.
IMPORTANT BIDDING
REMINDER
PBS Bidding is open
for the May bid month. This is the first month of
mandatory parallel bidding, which will be in effect until PBS is
fully implemented later this year. Please note:
Flight attendants will be unable to access SLIC until they
enter a mock PBS bid. After building your practice
PBS bid, be sure you also click the SUBMIT BID button to enter
the bid. This
generates an audit trail that will then allow you to enter the
SLIC system.
We have received
numerous complaints and concerns regarding the first round of
mock PBS bidding.
According to the DTW PBS Team, only 25% of the base
actually participated in the April Mock Bids, heavily skewing
the results. Other
one-time factors combined to make awards not representative of
what actual results would
be.
In addition to PBS
instructors in DTW, a phone support center is available
from 0700 to 1900 CST via the FA Scheduling Line (866) 612-0001,
Option 1, and then Option 7, as well as e-mail assistance at
PBSHelp@nwa.com.
PBS Online tutorials in ATLAS
should be completed by 2359 CDT April 15, 2008. If you
experience difficulty accessing the PBS tutorials via the LMS
system on ATLAS, please call the Help Desk at (612) 726-6955 or
(800) 328-2283.
SCHEDULING
UPDATE
Due to AFA Scheduling Committee
feedback to NWA, pattern class codes are now part of the
ACCESS open time search parameters. Tab to the very last
option on the open time search page and enter your PCC (pattern
class code): For example, if you only want to see 100%
domestic patterns, enter DO (for PCDO) as your syntax.
Recent changes regarding One
Way Trade processing have yielded vigorous
feedback from Local 94 members. To weigh in on
these changes, please send emails to LEC 94 at lec94@nwaafa.org.
AIR SAFETY, HEALTH,
SECURITY (ASHS) SEEKS INPUT ON SINGLE SERVICE
CART
On Tuesday, April 8, 2008, the single service
Smartsnacks cart was launched in the domestic market. This
"enhanced" service combines the weight of a full beverage cart
and for sale food items into one full-size cart, with one MC
Flight Attendant responsible for each cart. Many of you have
already contacted AFA with concerns about the safety of the
new service, citing problems like the excessive weight of the
cart, difficulty in maneuvering it and potential risk of
OJIs.
To further evaluate this
significant change to domestic service, our MEC ASHS Committee
needs your feedback NOW! Operate the cart as instructed in
the new service guidelines (i.e., only one FA per cart); we will
compile your input and deliver our recommendations to the
Company. Follow these two important
steps: 1. Submit your concerns and opinions to
Northwest Inflight Services via the Flight Attendant
Communication Center: 1-866-612-0001 option 2; In MSP,
612-726-6990; IFCOMMS@nwa.com; or on ATLAS
2. Submit your concerns and opinions to
the MEC ASHS Service Subcommittee Chair Chris Smith
at: serviceproblems@gmail.com or online via the
Service Carts Feedback form, created especially for this
purpose.
COUNCIL 99
HNL NEEDS OUR SUPPORT FOR ALOHA AIRLINES FLIGHT
ATTENDANTS
On March 30th, Aloha
Airlines announced it was ceasing operations immediately,
leaving hundreds of AFA-CWA Flight Attendants to face the
devastating reality of unemployment on the eve of a recession
and skyrocketing food prices. Our ALO brothers and sisters
need our support. Honolulu Council 99 Officers and
generous members have secured the following methods of providing
monetary and gift card/certificate donations (preferred stores
are Foodland, Safeway, Star Market and Costco) to "Show Our
Aloha" to former AFA Council 54 employees: Donate
money to the Wings Financial Credit Union (WFCU). Please
make checks payable to: Aloha Airlines Flight Attendant

Tadlock at dtadlock@nwaafa.org. **We are researching similar
assistance for our ATA colleagues and will advise you of contact
information as soon as it is available.
PROBATIONARY MANDATORY
MEETING INFORMATION REQUESTED
Local 94 filed a
grievance last year in response to the mandatory
monthly meetings on probationary off days, that have
been required by NWA management.
Additionally, Local 94 has received reports that these
meetings are violating contractual and federal
legalities. Please notify lec94@nwaafa.org if you are/were on probation and have been
required to attend a monthly mandatory meeting while on your
legal rest (contractual or FAR rest.) This would include
your minimum rest at base (12 hours,) double the flight time off
after extended duty flights (Asia flying,) FAR required 24
hours off in 7 days, etc.
LAST CALL FOR
FLEXSAVER CLAIMS and TAX DEADLINE -
APRIL15th
Do not forget to submit
2007 Flexsaver claims and complete your taxes by tomorrow,
Tuesday, April 15th! Leftover Flexsaver funds will not be
available after the April 15th
deadline.
PEER
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Recently, our office has
received an alarming spike in reports of crew peer conflict
issues where management has gotten involved. In most
cases, this "writing up" or "turning in" of fellow crewmembers
is for a variety of subjectively perceived "offenses"
that we, as frontline people-oriented safety professionals,
should be equipped to handle without taking it to the next
level. Many of these reports include calling for management
intervention over service discrepancies, personality, style and
attitude differences and alleged verbal slights. AFA AND
YOUR LOCAL 94 OFFICERS STRONGLY DISCOURAGE THIS DIVISIVE AND
DESTRUCTIVE PRACTICE BY ALL PARTIES.
In the most fundamental
sense, this behavior undermines CRM and essential onboard
teamwork by destroying mutual trust and respect in the
workplace. Absent trust, our on-the-job atmosphere can
become infected with suspicion, hostility and even fear of the
very colleagues charged to save your life in an emergency.
On a practical level, these reports generally lead to management
investigations with Q and As for all parties, discipline, and
even termination.
In the near future, we
will be sharing some Peer Conflict Resolution tools that recall
the principles of mutual respect in the workplace, along with
practical skills to meet on-the-job interpersonal demands.
This includes recognizing that tough times affect everyone
differently. The AFA Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is
available to assist with many individual issues, as well as crew
conflict situations. No one's job should be put at risk
because they are having a bad day or because they didn't do a
second beverage service. Likewise, no one should wield the
threat of management intervention, nor should they ever be so
encouraged.
If an onboard
conflict or scenario leaves you unsure of your options, contact
the AFA EAP at (800) 424-2401. Encourage your co-workers
to do the same.
DELTA VOTES!
Delta Flight
Attendants vote in the representational election
to join AFA, from April 23rd to May 28th. If Delta
Flight Attendants are represented by AFA in the event there
is a merger, there will be no need for another
representational election of the combined group. Our
contract will not be at risk and we may begin seeking
improvements immediately in a combined agreement. Support
our colleagues at Delta in finally gaining a seat at the
bargaining table and the protections of a negotiated
contract. If you have time to volunteer with the Delta
AFA Get-Out-The-Vote campaign, email flight attendant
activists at: organize@unitedafa.org.
