meet at all bases in the coming months.
The two day meeting will be held at
the DTW Westin on September 9th and 10th. Members in good
standing are encouraged to attend the meetings!
Specific times and important agenda items will be announced in
an upcoming DTW Hotline.
DETROIT HOUSE PARTY . .
. YOU'RE INVITED!
Our friends and colleagues at Mesaba AFA
Council 46/Detroit invite you to a very important event this
week!
As you
may know, AFA-CWA has endorsed democratic candidate Barack Obama
for President of the United States. AFA-CWA has always
been vocal about supporting candidates of every political stripe
who are willing to stand up and fight for our issues. Republican
or Democrat, Green or Libertarian, if a candidate believes in
the rights of working families and respects our chosen
profession, we respond in kind and support that
candidate.

Mesaba Council 46 President Nick Burchfield will be
hosting a convention night house party on Thursday, August
28th, 2008.
We are bringing together Obama supporters, as well as
anyone who supports our profession, unionism, and the
preservation of the middle class.
Dinner is served at 6:00pm to 7:00pm
at the LEC President's home: 35100 Cady Street
Westland MI 48186, or click http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Westland+&state=MI&address=35100+Cady+Street&zipcode=48186 for mapquest directions. After
dinner, we will gather around televisions to watch Obama accept
his party's nomination. At 9:00pm, we will have a "Take
Back the White House" bonfire!
Please RSVP as soon as possible to
Mesaba AFA Local 46 President Nick Burchfield. Email Nick

DL and NW Senior VPs
of INFLIGHT VISIT DETROIT
Detroit Inflight hosted a meet-and-greet cocktail
party with NW SVP of Inflight Julie Showers, and DL SVP of
Inflight Joanne Smith last week Thursday. Your AFA
Local Executive Council attended the meeting along with several
members clad in AFA shirts. Unfortunately, the format
of the gathering did not provide for a much needed question and
answer time with Julie and Joanne. A Detroit AFA
activist asked Joanne, "Since Delta continues to boast about its
direct relationship with its employees, how is it that the only
direct talks about this merger have been with the pilots?"
Ms. Smith answered that Delta believes in choice for its
employees when it comes to union representation. When
pressed about the millions Delta spent and will spend on an
anti-union campaign, Joanne was non-committal.
We asked Joanne about sick bank accrual and seniority
integration. On the question of sick, Ms. Smith said the
issue was being discussed and would be decided soon. DTW
AFA Council Representatives provided Ms. Smith a business
card so she could give a direct answer to the question as
quickly as possible. Seniority integration received the
same type of response, though Joanne said that each side would
elect representatives to provide input into merging
seniority. We reminded the Senior Vice President that
Northwest Airlines flight attendants have already elected
representation.
Joanne and Julie are scheduled to hold the same type of
event in Minneapolis on Wednesday, August 27th at the
Bloomington Embassy Suites from 1700 to 2000. If you
can join other flight attendant activists there in a show of
solidarity for union representation, please contact our Member
Engagement office at 952.241.4138, or email impact@nwaafa.org.
GET
INVOLVED. DESTINATION: REPRESENTATION
The "New Delta" will be
the world's largest carrier. The combined work force will
not just follow industry standard, it
will be the industry
standard. A representational election for flight
attendants at Delta will be held after the company satisfies
government formalities for mergers. Perhaps more than any
election in our careers, this will stand alone as the most
important. Now, more than ever, your union needs your
participation to help secure a future of representation.
Click on the official
campaign logo to go to the "Join the Campaign" page of the
new Northwest / Delta organizing campaign Web site. This
Web site will show you the appropriate chairperson for your
state. We're currently looking for state chairs, and
activists at all levels. Make sure there is a union pin on
your uniform, and an AFA tag on your suitcase. Stop by the
union offices under gate A8 for any of those items, and for
information on how you can help in our effort to keep
representation.
