EAP "Professional Standards," or Management Intervention?

Your Local Executive Council reminds you of the importance of using the EAP when dealing with matters of a “Pro-Stan” nature.  A heated conflict with a peer can leave us feeling like the only viable solution is reporting our colleague to management. This path most often results in lengthy investigations, and the ominous “Q&A” trip to Minneapolis.

The Flight Attendant Agreement says that management must refer 1st instance cases of peer conflict to the AFA-EAP.  Please see page 21.5 of the new contract for detailed information.  If you need a contract, stop by the union office.

All of us have had misunderstandings with colleagues.  While the vast majority of onboard conflicts between flight attendants are settled between the parties,  some cases may require further discussion.  Your EAP and LEC representatives ask that you make EAP your FIRST call in these situations.  Call 800.424.2406 anytime to reach a dedicated EAP representative.  Calls to the EAP are confidential.  Please click on http://www.afa94.org/EAP.html to learn about your local EAP and for a list of Detroit EAP volunteers.

PBS

The PBS deadline in September for October bidding is September 13th at 1000 DTW base local.  Please continue to direct your PBS questions and concerns to pbshelp@nwa.com and be sure to call 866.612.0001, option 1, then option 7, for “live” PBS assistance.

EAP WEEK IN DETROIT

Pro-Stan.  Chemical Abuse Program.  Critical Incident Stress Management.

The Association of Flight Attendants Employee Assistance Program (EAP) encompasses all of the above committees many of us have known for years.  LEC 94 and Detroit Inflight welcome our extremely hardworking MEC and LEC EAP representatives for a special EAP week in Detroit.

Beginning Sunday, September 7th, to Saturday the 12th, EAP reps will be available at DTW flight attendant check-in from 0800 to 1800.  Please take a moment to stop and learn about this integral part of our Union.  Brochures and information detailing all of EAP’s programs will be available, as well as contact information for our highly trained and dedicated volunteer EAP representatives.

A MESSAGE FROM DETROIT LEC94 PRESIDENT DIANA MITCHAM...

I am happy to announce that DTW flight attendant and AFA member Kevin Boston will become an Assisting Member Advocate for the members of Council 94 effective October 1, 2008.  Kevin steps in to support the Detroit Council as our former Council Representative Janette Rook was elected MEC Vice President in late spring this year.

Kevin has been a Northwest Airlines Flight Attendant since 1992. Prior to joining NWA, Kevin was an LEC President for the former Midway Airlines.

You can contact Kevin at kboston@nwaafa.org.  Please join me and the Detroit Council in welcoming Kevin!

RIGHT TO REPRESENTATION

Have you ever had a friendly chat with your manager that resulted in a coaching being placed in your mailbox?  Contract reference 21.F.1. states, “When a flight attendant is requested to meet with management regarding matters which are disciplinary, or may lead to discipline, he/she shall be informed in writing and/or via Company email of the specific subject(s) to be discussed prior to the meeting, and that he/she has the right to union representation.”

If you are in a meeting or a telephone conversation with a manager which could result in discipline, you must be offered Union representation.  If you are not offered representation, stop the meeting and call the AFA at 734.532.8404.  The manager must take reasonable steps to delay the meeting until all parties, including the Union representative, can attend.

MEC MEETING HELD IN DETROIT NEXT WEEK

The NWA AFA Master Executive Council, made up of the nine Local Executive Presidents from each base, will be holding its September meeting in Detroit. LEC 94 is the first stop for the MEC in their effort to meet in all bases.

The two day meeting will be held at the DTW Westin Wings Room on September 9th from 0930-1700 (lunch from 1200-1300) and on the 10th from 0930 – 1200, resuming in the afternoon from 1500-1700.  All Members in good standing are encouraged to attend the public portions of the meeting.  Please see www.afa94.org for complete details and the meeting agenda.

MONTHLY MAXIMUM & EBLA

The Monthly Maximum is determined by the Established Base Line Average (EBLA) for each base.  In Detroit, the EBLA is 83 hours for September.  The monthly minimum for an 83 hour EBLA is 70, the maximum is 96.  Reserve flight attendants are released upon request at the EBLA.  Please see the table on page 5.36 of the Agreement for details about the EBLA.

REMEMBER, One Way Trades allow you to fly 10 hours over the monthly max.  In September, the monthly max is 96 in DTW, making the cap on One Way Trades 106.  (6.G.4.f)

GET INVOLVED.  DESTINATION:  REPRESENTATION

The "New Delta" will be the world's largest carrier.  The combined work force will not just follow industry standard, it will be  the industry standard.  A representational election for flight attendants at Delta will be held after the company satisfies government formalities for mergers.  Perhaps more than any election in our careers, this will stand alone as the most important.  Now, more than ever, your union needs your participation to help secure a future of representation.

Click on the official campaign logo to go to the "Join the Campaign" page of the new Northwest / Delta organizing campaign Web site.  This Web site will show you the appropriate chairperson for your state.  We're currently looking for state chairs, and activists at all levels.  Make sure there is a union pin on your uniform, and an AFA tag on your suitcase.  Stop by the union offices under gate A8 for any of those items, and for information on how you can help in our effort to keep representation.
