Tell your federal representative to modify the proposed direct student loan program so that servicing, financial literacy and collections remain with established HESC staff that provide experience, expertise and outstanding service to schools and students throughout New York State.

Subject: HESC: Experience - Expertise - Quality Service

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a member of the New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF).

I am writing to urge you to modify the direct student loan program proposal.

This proposal would eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Competition between lenders that make federally guaranteed loans and competition between the two major federal student loan programs have led to significant and continuous quality improvements in service levels and borrower benefits that reduce loan costs for students and parents.

I also urge you to take into consideration the fiscal impact this legislation may have on the 700 employees at New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) who deliver this quality service to New York State residents.

While, it is understood that changes may have to take place in the industry, I urge you to allow servicing, financial literacy and collections to remain with State agencies and established HESC staff that provide experience, expertise and outstanding service to schools and students throughout New York State.

Fight for New York's economy by allowing HESC to continue to deliver this quality service to New York State residents under the new Federal direct loan program if it is adopted.

Sincerely,
