Subject: Help Restore CUNY Funding

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

For the past several years, the City Council has been mindful of its obligation to maintain stability in the City University of New York's budget. As a member of the CUNY community, I ask that you once again support the university by restoring vitally needed funds to CUNY as you take action on the Mayor's budget reductions.

I don't have to remind you of the unique role that CUNY plays in public higher education. CUNY is a one of a kind institution, educating and graduating many women and more people of color than any other institution of higher education. It brings hope to the urban poor and working class that they too have a chance to achieve the American dream as they struggle to gain a college degree. I support the Chancellor's budget request that includes: $38.1 million in fiscal year 2007 restorations for the Vallone Scholarships, Council Safety Net, operational support and Council-funded program initiatives along with $19.6 million in enhancements.

In addition, I ask that you consider a special appropriation for our community colleges that has been proposed by my union, the PSC. The PSC estimates that the Council's providing $8 million for the Council Scholars' initiative will allow the university to recruit and hire at least 100 full-time faculty and faculty counselors for the community colleges, with emphasis on searches that are broadly inclusive. I am proud of this concept and hope that you will include funds for it.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
