Defend Adjuncts at Weber State University: When we need help, we'll get national letters, too!

The President of Weber State University, Ann Millner, has announced her intention to cut the salaries of contingent faculty 7% for the 2009-10 school year, while not planning to cut the regular pay of full-time faculty. The proposal requires approval by the university's board of trustees. We ask that you send a letter to President Millner, protesting this unfair treatment of adjuncts.

Subject: Don't Single Out Adjunct Faculty for Budget Cuts

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a faculty member at Rutgers AAUP-AFT, I write in protest of the proposal at Weber State University to cut the salaries of contingent faculty by 7%. These faculty members are part of the professional workforce of your university. Their lack of benefits and low salaries, made worse by being singled out for this pay cut to their entire salary, are an indication of the lack of respect you have not just for this group of faculty, but for the profession and the mission of the university.

To propose such inequity is unacceptable at a university, the place at which our students study democratic ideals. I join with members of the Coalition for Contingent Academic Labor from across North America in asking you to show respect for all who contribute to Weber State. If sacrifice is necessary, that burden must be shared equally by all at the university.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The rights of contingent faculty everywhere are at stake.

If Weber State University can cut salaries with impunity, then other universities may also decide that they can solve their budget problems by singling out the lowest paid faculty members and further degrade our status in higher education.

If we participate today, then, when we need help, we will get nation-wide letters, too. Solidarity matters!
