Protest McCormick PTL Tuition Remission Decision
On March 27, 2009, President Richard McCormick rejected the University Senate's cost-free recommendation that PTLs be eligible for 50% tuition remission. McCormick claims that it would be a "burden" to implement.
However, McCormick did not provide any justification for his position. We urge you to express your dismay and dissatisfaction by sending an email to him and to the Chair of the Board of Governors, Rev. Dr. M. William Howard, Jr.; the two faculty representatives on the Board, Professors Martha Cotter and Samuel Rabinowitz; and the Secretary for the Board.
By sending an email to McCormick, we are challenging him to provide answers to the following questions posed to him on March 27 at the University Senate meeting by PTLFC-AAUP-AFT Vice President, Richard Gomes:
1. Which administrative complications does this provision create? 2. How could this provision represent "too great a burden" for Rutgers?
A meeting has been promised to provide answers.
Click to take action and your message will be sent to President Richard L. McCormick; the Chair of the Board of Governors, Rev. Dr. M. William Howard, Jr.; the two faculty representatives on the Board, Professors Martha Cotter and Samuel Rabinowitz; and the Secretary for the Board.
You may edit the sample letter we provide. The talking points below can aid you in drafting your statement. You may wish to review the University Senate's Recommendation on PTL tuition remission.

Subject: Yes to PTL Tuition Remission
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am dissatisifed that President McCormick has rejected the University Senate's recommendation for 50% PTL Tuition Remission. This policy change would be an income-generating policy that helps Rutgers' financial picture, while it also supports PTL professional development and gives student access first priority. Other AAU insitutions and New Jersey community and county colleges provide this benefit, so Rutgers suffers by comparison.
Please establish PTL Tuition Remission as Rutgers policy. It would be good business for Rutgers and good for the continued professional development of your valuable part-time lecturer faculty.
Sincerely,
|
