Greetings,
Thanks to those of you who attended
yesterday’s Board of Governors meeting – the support
was appreciated.
For those who could not make the
meeting, picture a full audience and applause when we made our
case. We explained
to the Governors how faculty are willing to work with them on
addressing the University’s budget woes, but without clear
information on the specific nature of deficits and expenditures,
crafting a solution that abrogates parts of our negotiated
salary increases is difficult, especially in the face of
continuing expansion of football facilities and increasing
appointments of vice-presidents and other executive-level
positions. I was
proud to submit to the Governors a petition with over 1,200
faculty and staff signatures. Thanks to all of you for your
support.

We will be meeting again with
representatives of the administration later today to hear their
response to our latest offer of a phased system of salary
increase delays combined with the resolution of various
outstanding disputes over sabbaticals, teaching loads, etc. Our
intention is to help the University recoup the money lost
through state funding with minimal effect on programs and our
base salaries. We believe creative solutions that generate the
requisite savings while compensating deserving faculty are
possible. TA/GA
salary increases must be more carefully protected and PTL salary
increases, to the extent that PTLs are reappointed, should
remain intact following the example of other adjuncts throughout
the state.
As developments occur, we will send
further updates.
Meanwhile, we appreciate hearing from any of you with
innovative suggestions.
With best wishes as we spend our
summer in these trenches,
Adrienne E. Eaton, President
Rutgers AAUP-AFT
