Greetings,
Monday's BBQ was incredible! Thank you all for coming out to
make it so much fun. And a special thanks to the new members who
walked up to the table unbidden to tell me, "This is a great
organization. How do I sign up?"
Yeah, it's that
easy.
Maintaining our membership is vital to the success
of the union, and this year we're pushing to reach our highest
numbers ever! You can be a part of that effort, and if you've
been sitting on the fence about getting involved you'll be happy
to know that this month we're going to sweeten the deal: just
for talking to your friends and signing new members, you could
win a $100 Amazon Gift Card! Just in time to buy some of those
expensive new books!
How to
Win!
Signing members just gets easier
every day! Here's how you do it:
- Download and print a membership form here: http://www.rutgersaaup.org/join.htm.
If you want a bunch of them, feel free to stop by the office for
some extra copies!
- Tell your friends about the importance of union
membership. They should already know we get competitive pay, 8%
yearly raises, health coverage, dental, and more--but it
couldn't hurt to remind them! Let them know their membership is
critical to the union's ability to organize on their behalf.
- Add your own name to the top-left corner of the form
so we know who gets the credit! Then just return the completed
form to 11 Stone St. in New Brunswick--you can drop it in campus
mail, or regular mail, or stop by the office any time--we're
just two blocks down from the Rutgers Student Center on College
Ave.
- Sign the most friends by September 30 to win!
The prize will be awarded at our "Thank the Organizers" party on
October 2.
Some Helpful Talking Points
- Competitive Pay: With 8% raises every year, graduate
employees at Rutgers earn some of the most competitive salaries
in the country.
- Great Benefits: Excellent health coverage, dental
plans, paid work & family leave, and strong workload
protections--our contract speaks for itself!
- Together we are stronger! Strong membership improves
our capacity to represent your interests to University
administrators as well as state and federal legislators.
- Pennies a day! The difference between full member
dues and the representation fee already deducted from your pay
is only about $20 per year. That's just 96 cents per
paycheck for academic-year appointments, and only 91
cents per paycheck for calendar-year assistants. It's not
about the money, it's about your valued support!
- Security: Tell your friends they do not need to
write their Social Security Number on the form! I get this
question often, because sensible people are rightly concerned
about handing out important identifying information. We'll take
care of this at the office, so you don't need to carry it
around!
So what are you waiting for? Write to me at taga@gsa.rutgers.edu with
any questions or if you'd like to become a department rep and
get help identifying non-members in your program.
