Subject: SCPS Can Afford It!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I'm aware of the cuts in education funding and the fiscal challenges you face, but I can't afford to bear the brunt of these cuts.

Your proposed salary schedule will diminish my earnings not only this year but throughout my career and retirement. Given the rise in food costs, energy costs, transportation costs, and health care costs, your proposal would create an untenable situation for me and many of my co-workers.

I understand that, due to the reductions in the workforce, the total cost of employee compensation resulting from the adoption of the salary schedule proposed by my bargaining team would be less than the cost of funding employee compensation last year.

My fellow workers and I have shown good faith and have shouldered the extra burden of a smaller workforce. Now it's time for you to reciprocate.

Add to the savings of paying for a reduced workforce with those accumulated by a total hiring freeze and a cessation of all discretionary spending. Then, make a prudent draw on the "rainy day fund" and I believe you will be able to provide my co-workers and me with resources to help us meet the rising cost of living.

Other districts have found the means to provide for their employees' welfare by employing these strategies. I'm convinced that you can do it too.

I look forward to your reply and support of my bargaining team's salary proposal.

Sincerely,

Background Information

"No salary increase for this year" is not just "no salary increase for this year."

Agreeing to the School Board's salary proposal, or having the proposal imposed on you, would negate the gains earned in the past, forever! The School Board's salary proposal decreases all future salary earnings throughout your career and throughout your retirement.

It's one thing to feel that your efforts and contributions are not valued by SCPS, but it's quite another thing to have your salary schedule and your retirement devalued.
