UM Students Hunger Strike!
Student sit-ins, massive rallies, arrests of community leaders... Apparently this doesn't matter to University of Miami President Donna Shalala. She has convened two negotiation sessions that failed to bring justice to striking janitorial workers employed by the UNICCO company.
With no other options, students and workers are on a HUNGER STRIKE. Starting today, they are risking their very lives to demand dignity on the UM campus.
Urge Shalala to require responsible contractors on campus!

Subject: Please support worker's rights.
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I had hoped for different results than the two negotiation sessions that failed to bring justice to UNICCO workers.
With the hunger strike underway, this issue is one of life and death. As a concerned member of this community I urge you to:
* direct UNICCO to discontinue unlawful union avoidance tactics, and bargain in good faith with campus workers at the University of Miami,
* direct UNICCO to agree to card check neutrality, recognizing the campus workers union once a majority of the employees have signed cards authorizing the union to represent them,
* avoid outsourcing campus services unless absolutely necessary, and insure that ALL campus workers at the University of Miami receive a living wage contracting only with companies who pay a living wage and provide adequate healthcare,
* discontinue your contract with UNICCO if they continue to delay and disrupt the efforts of campus workers to organize a union and negotiate a fair contract.
Your leaderhip as President of the University of Miami is sorely needed.
Sincerely,
|
