The Student Labor Action Project at the University of Washington, Seattle Campus is holding a rally this Thursday in solidarity with the workers of Honduras. Currently, there are 2 factories: Huggar de Honduras and Vision Tex, which Nike outsourced UW collegiate apparel products to. The workers are currently owed more than $1.5 million in legally owed severance pay.

UW SLAP has two demands for this rally: (1) that Nike be put on notice, which means they get 30 days to fix their current violations of the UW Code of Conduct and (2) that student members of SLAP be given direct involvement at the Licensing Negotiations Table.

President Mark Emmert

Dear President Emmert:
As a supporter of the Student Labor Action Project at the University of Washington, I want to ask you to demand Nike to uphold its side of the contract, especially since the UW has set a precedent in the past regarding the Estofel case and the cutting of the Russell Athletic Contract when Russell was in violation of the UW Code of Conduct. It is imperative that the UW take action before the renewal of the Licensing Agreement this July 1, 2009. The world is looking at the prestigious University of Washington to continue setting precedents in respecting worker's rights abroad and listen to their students who are concern about UW's responsibility to the community.

I hope this email will lead you to take action and support your student's demands in support of worker's rights and justice in all communities.

Thank you
