Thanks to your calls and emails to Legislators and Governor Gregoire, we are on our way to expanding High Speed Internet across Washington.

Governor Chris Gregoire signed SB 6438 – The High Speed Internet Initiative - on March 31, 2008.  This legislation directs the Washington Department of Information Services to develop a strategic plan and specific proposals how to expand high speed internet statewide to be completed in time for the 2009 legislative session.  This plan is an important first step for making sure that all residents and communities in Washington have high speed internet access. 

The public agrees that expanding high speed internet across Washington is critical.  A recent poll shows that 60% of the public supports expanding high speed internet to neighborhoods and communities that currently do not have access to it.  Support is strong across all voters and areas of the state.  And voters particularly support the educational, public safety and health benefits high speed internet brings to communities. 
 
As our economy slips towards recession, high-speed internet provides a critical tool for future economic growth.  It jumpstarts new businesses, creates good jobs, and fuels our economy so Washington can keep up with other states and our global trading partners.  And communities around the state will benefit from the health, safety and educational opportunities provided by high speed internet.
