FCC Task force: Americans are overcharged for Internet access

A new report by Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) Research Fellow Richard Bennett reviews the historical development of the Internet architecture and finds that contrary to claims that the Internet has always been a "dumb pipe," in fact, an extraordinarily high degree of intelligence is embedded in the network core. Telemedicine grows despite key challenges
UnitedHealthcare (UHC) is developing a national telehealth network to increase physician presence in underserved communities - both rural and urban. Telehealth is the emerging practice of using cameras, microphones, and often robots to connect patients and doctors that are not in the same place. These systems run on high-speed and high-capacity Internet connections, which makes it difficult for those in rural areas to gain access. Read the Whole Story

Examining global examples for a national broadband plan
A few weeks ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) held a workshop in which policy leaders recommended and discussed goals and benchmarks for the national broadband plan. The benchmarks fall into three categories: availability, quality, and cost. Read the Whole Story

U.S. Broadband Coalition delivers report to FCC
The U.S. Broadband Coalition has released its initial report on the upcoming national broadband strategy. The report synthesizes the views of the coalition's 160-plus member-organizations. The U.S. Broadband Coalition intends that the report will serve as a building block for the National Broadband Task Force - which will be delivering a national broadband policy to Congress in early 2010. Applicants seeking broadband funds searchable by technology
Fierce Broadband Wireless analyzed the list of applicants seeking broadband stimulus funds, allowing users to search applicants by technological category. Many of the applications are for companies operating in underserved areas, from rural Alabama to urban Los Angeles. Read the Whole Story
