Subject: STOP THE CUTS to health care and state services

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I support the prudent use of federal economic recovery money to protect jobs and shore up state services. I strongly support the Senate's increases in general revenue and federal dollars used to fund services for vulnerable working families during these emergency times, especially funding for the Departments of Health, Mental Health and Social Services. Please maintain that spending which will provide much needed help to families and will protect and create jobs.

In addition, I ask you to support any amendments that do more for children and families. Support any amendments that provide increased assistance to struggling families needing child care or support for foster parents. Also you must support additional spending to help children of working families get access to affordable health insurance through CHIP and SCHIP.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Missouri House Leaders—particularly Representatives Allen Icet, Rick Stream, and Ron Richard made deep budget cuts that eliminate hundreds of millions from the Departments of Social Services, Mental Health, and Health and Senior Services.

The final House budget includes significant funding cuts for mental health services and services for adults and children with developmental disabilities.

The House version of the budget also eliminated the Governor's proposal to provide health coverage to low income parents making up to 50% of the federal poverty level ($919/month for a family of 4).  And it eliminates funding to increase access to health insurance for children under Medicaid and SCHIP.

These cuts will impact up to 70,000 Missourians who need state services. The budget cuts also result in more than 5,000 fewer jobs in both the public and private sector.
