Tell N.C. State: End Racist Policies Now!

Show your support for Nedra Rollins, a North Carolina State University housekeeper who was unjustly fired for not turning in her identification badge key! A few weeks ago, Nedra Rollins, a housekeeper at the NCSU Vet. School, and UE local 150 union member, was unjustly fired. She is a long time union member that has stood up for her co-workers when they have been subjected to unfair treatment in the past. In August, the management began to demand that housekeepers leave their ID badges on campus when they finish working. Workers who turn in their badges at the end of their workdays risk harassment by university police if stopped and questioned while on campus. Housekeepers - who are all black and latin@ and overwhelmingly women - are the only people on campus that are asked to hand in their ID badges at the end of their shifts. Other campus workers and students are not asked to do so. There has been a long history of unjustly blaming housekeepers for the theft of campus property. This policy unfairly targets housekeepers for surveillance based on an unfounded belief that they are responsible for these thefts. Ms. Rollins has a hearing in about a week, so please support her, UE Local 150, and the NCSU Student Worker Alliance by telling N.C. State Chancellor Oblinger: End Racist ID Policies Now! Reinstate Nedra Rollins!

Subject: Reinstate Nedra Rollins

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am appalled that the North Carolina State University administration discriminates against campus housekeepers.

It is unjust to ask housekeepers to turn in their ID badges and keys at the end of their shifts while faculty, staff and students can come and go as they please. This subjects them to harassment from campus security and unfairly targets housekeepers for surveillance based on an unfounded belief that they are responsible for the theft of campus property.

I urge you to change this discriminatory policy and reinstate Ms. Nedra Rollins, a housekeeper who was unjustly fired for rightfully refusing to turn in her badge.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Campus workers are also subject to the racist history of the state of North Carolina, which prohibits the right of public employees to collectively bargain (N.C. General Statute 95-98-- see nchope.org for more information).
