Take Time to Cut Property Taxes Right!
Don't Buy the Latest Tallahassee Tax Scam!
Tell the Senate and the Governor to take their time and do it right
On Monday the Florida House passed a property tax cut package that will do little for Florida's resident homeowners but will devastate local communities. With the exception of Representatives Ausley and Richardson who stood alone in doing the right thing, House Republicans and Democrats voted for the package out of fear, using the tired old adage that there was no way they could vote against a tax cut.
They were wrong. It should have been easy to vote against a hastily drawn up tax cut plan that has been rushed through the process and which has questionable benefits for homeowners but hurts the ability for local governments to fund critical services.
Now we need the Florida Senate and Governor Crist to do the just and courageous thing and admit that the current special session has been a disaster and take the time to do this right for the November ballot.

Subject: Take Time on Property Tax Refrom - Do it Right
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am writing to encourage you to stop the rush on the current property tax cut plans and to take the time needed to produce a proposal that provides Floridians the tax cuts they need while protecting the ability of my local government to provide the services I need. It has become painfully obvious to me from the many media accounts I have seen of what is going on in Tallahassee that the process has broken down and that there is a real chance for serious unintended consequences.
I am particularly troubled by the caps on non-homestead properties, the cuts to our school budgets and the loss of control for my local elected officials to set my property tax rates. I am also very concerned about our small and rural counties. These are huge issues that can only benefit from more time and more deliberation. It seems to me as if the property tax crisis is part of a bigger problem in Florida and should be addressed in a more careful and comprehensive manner. The Florida House has so clouded the issue that I do not believe a good proposal can come out of the current process.
I understand your desire to do something sooner than later and I can certainly use a tax cut but I want my tax cut to be meaningful and in a way that protects my local government's ability to provide the services that create a better quality of life for me and my family. I am convinced that with your leadership and efforts that we can get a good plan but only if you take the time to do it right. I would much rather vote on a clearer, more comprehensive plan in November than anything that I have seen thus far for the January ballot.
Sincerely,
