Subject: Ask your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Employee Free Choice Act
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am writing to ask you to sign on as a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act. If you have done so already, thank you. If you have not, please do so immediately so the House can take up this important piece of legislation.
The Employee Free Choice Act would rectify decades in which the law and regulators have looked the other way while professional "union avoidance" specialists thwart the desire of workplace majorities to exercise their democratic right to seek collective bargaining. We must end the era of threats against union organizers and heed the will of millions of workers who have said they would join a union if given a chance.
The Employee Free Choice Act would: 1) Give a majority of workers in any workplace the choice of how to go about obtaining collective bargaining; 2) Enforce deadlines for agreeing to a first contract; and 3) Increase penalties on employers who violate the right of workers to form a union.
Far from the over-the-top claims of opponents, the Employee Free Choice Act would promote the will of the majority in a workplace by placing workers in the driver?s seat with regard to how they proceed in an effort to bargain collectively. Opponents' idea of "democracy," on the other hand, is to allow employers unlimited one-on-one and group meetings to bash unions while unions have no on-site access to employees during union election campaigns. This one-sided system must end.
We believe that if a majority of the House co-sponsors the Employee Free Choice Act, the measure will come to the floor sooner rather than later. For working people, the Employee Free Choice Act would provide profound support for our ability to improve our livelihoods in an economy that has taken so much from ordinary working people over the last few months.
Please co-sponsor this important piece of legislation. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
|
