Subject: Please support SB 1569

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I'm writing to ask you to support SB 1569, the Unemployment Insurance bill that enables Texas to accept $555 million in federal stimulus funding for Texans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

SB 1569 is good for working people. Texas is #50 in the U.S. in the percentage of unemployed workers who qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefits - a pathetic 20 percent. The measure would add 45,000 workers - mainly those who work for low wages or part-time - to the eligible rolls and would help see the families of those workers through the worst economic stretch we have seen in decades.

SB 1569 is also good for employers. The $555 million would forestall borrowing that would cost Texas employers $80 million in interest. As a result, the bill would help see employers through these hard times as well. SB 1569 would cover the cost of increased eligibility for at least nine years, giving the Texas economy time to recover.

SB 1569 is far-sighted. A task force will conduct a long-overdue review of the UI system and make recommendations to improve the system for everyone.

Leaving $555 million unclaimed because of abstract notions of "state's rights" or because some take offense at the federal government's role in public policy is wrong for working families and wrong for Texas employers. Please support SB 1569, which will create a better Unemployment Insurance system and serve all Texans well.

Sincerely,
