Board of Education on Video *Classroom Resources for Hispanic
Heritage Month State Board of
Education Video Online: The Texas Education Agency
today announced that all State Board of Education meetings will
be broadcast live online with full audio and video feeds,
beginning on Wednesday, September 16. A link to the Webcast will
appear on the TEA home page at www.tea.state.tx.us on the day of meetings.
and also will be posted at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index4.aspx?id=3876. Of
particular interest at this week's meeting of the SBOE will be
the comments of the Board's chosen experts on proposed revisions
of social-studies curriculum standards. You can tune in for that
discussion on Thursday morning when the Board meets as a
committee of the whole. An hour has been allotted for public
testimony on this item. Further Board discussion, public
testimony, and possible decision-making on the social-studies
standards will occur when the Board meets in
January. The video broadcasts are required by HB
772, a bill passed last spring by Rep. Donna Howard, Democrat of
Austin, and Sen. Wendy Davis, Democrat of Fort Worth. Live audio
of Board meetings has been available since
2004. The live video Webcasts will provide access
to meetings of all subcommittees, where some crucial decisions
are made, as well as of the full Board. Video of the Board
meetings will be readily accessible online for six months after
each meeting and then will remain available upon request for up
to five years, according to today's TEA
announcement. The agenda for the three-day
September meeting is available at: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index4.aspx?id=3785.
Hispanic Heritage Month: For
information and classroom resources marking National Hispanic
Heritage Month, September 15 through October 15, see the
American Federation of Teachers Web site at: http://www.aft.org/teachers/hispanic.htm.
Among other instructional aids you'll find there is an
AFT-created poster, available for download in both English and
Spanish, that depicts the many contributions of Hispanic
Americans and displays suggested classroom activities for
celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.
