Dear Activist,
Thank you! Your efforts have led to some progress in House healthcare reform legislation in Washington D.C. On Thursday, Oct. 29, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi released a fiscally responsible and progressive healthcare reform bill that brings America's families closer to affordable, quality healthcare.

Pelosi's bill is a big step towards the kind of healthcare reform that America needs and includes many provisions favorable to working families, including a Public Option Plan and an Employer Mandate, and it does not tax our benefits. Such provisions will keep insurance companies honest and provide competition to drive down costs, and require employers to act responsibly and provide insurance for employees.

But, our work is not over. We must continue to remind Congress, specifically the Senate, about the three key elements of healthcare reform that must be made law. We need:

  1. A government-run Public Plan Option that provides competition with private insurance companies to keep them honest

  2. An Employer-mandate ("Pay or Play") that requires employers to provide workers with health insurance or pay a penalty to fund the Public Plan.

  3. Absolutely no taxation of our union negotiated benefits.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, the TWU in conjunction with all AFL-CIO affiliates is holding a National Sticker-Up and Call to Congress Day. Join in this effort across the country by wearing "healthcare reform band-aid stickers," and making calls to Congress demanding urgent action on health care reform. Check with your local president to get a sticker.
