Voice for Child Care Workers

As health care professionals, we know our union gives us the voice we need to provide quality patient care. Like us, child care providers in California want to provide the best care to kids and families. They are advocting for a bill pending in the state senate that would give them a stronger voice in decisions that affect them. The bill, AB 1164, would allow providers to join together and form an organization that could be officially recognized as their representative. With a united voice, providers could work together with county and state officials to help solve our child care crisis and improve services.

Subject: Child Care Providers Need a Voice

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a member of United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals, an AFSCME affiliate. As a health care professional, my union is my voice for improving the quality of patient care.

Child care providers also deserve a voice in the decisions that affect them and the families they serve. Please support AB 1164, which would allow child care providers to join together and form an organization that could be officially recognized as their representative. The providers could work with their state and county officials to ensure consistency, set up uniform standards, improve access to health insurance, and create registry and substitute pools.

A providers' organization would only be recognized once a majority of providers choose it. This bill would not require a provider to join a union, and child care providers would not become public employees. AB 1164 would not change the agreements between parents and providers, and it prohibits providers from going on strike.

Please support AB 1164 so child care providers can have a voice in making sure families have affordable, quality child care.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Just like health care professionals need a voice to protect the quality of patient care, child care providers in California want a voice in helping families have affordable, quality child care.

A bill pending in the state legislature, AB 1164, would give family child care providers a stronger voice in the decisions that affect them.  It would allow providers to join together and form an organization that could be officially recognized as their representative.

You can e-mail you state legislators today and urge them to support AB 1164.
